How do we eliminate abortion stigma in Tennessee?
If you have had an abortion, share your story! Storytelling is a powerful tool to increase understanding and educate. Frequently when people talk about abortion they treat it as solely a political subject and they don’t think about the actual people who have abortions. Help us talk to people on the reality on abortion in Tennessee. We know that sometimes people feel like they don’t have anyone to talk to about their abortion. We want to be there for you. We don’t believe anyone should be made to keep quiet or feel ashamed. You can reach out to us about sharing your story here.
Read these stories. If you know nothing about abortion, if you know some, if you think you know everything; it doesn’t matter. Read the stories on this site. Increase your understanding of abortion and people’s attitudes around their abortion. Then, talk about abortion! Talk about the stories you read. With family, friends, co-workers, everyone. We have got to stop treating abortion as a political, scary, and secretive subject.
We also recognize that abortion can be a really tough subject to talk about. If you care about reproductive health, rights, and justice and want to learn more about how to talk about abortion and how to support people who have had an abortion then maybe our Conversations About Abortion workshop is for you. If you’re part of an organization that is interested in this workshop email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can set one up wherever you are in Tennessee.
Become a partner of the Tennessee Stories Project. The Tennessee Stories Project is building an alliance of partners who will work with us to end abortion stigma. Click here for more information on what is a partnership and why your organization should sign up.
We can’t always be on the defensive and only talk about abortion when we’re fighting restrictive laws. We need to be proactive in supporting people who have had abortions, offering up education on abortion, and create a culture of compassion and understanding in Tennessee. If you have more ideas on how to do this let us know!
The Tennessee Stories Project is sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee and Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region. If you have a story to tell, see our Contact page.
